The natural disaster that has
befallen us is an appeal for money.
00:03:33

Those in the camps. My louse department
of disaster management says their country
00:03:46
needs about $43000000.00 for cycle
relief or thought it is say they have
00:03:53
secured the house for that amount. Is
00:03:57
a flood of displaced in our district. She
00:04:04
says there are problems at the county
because of. They were initially given is
00:04:09

and they were given a plate of maize
00:04:16
a flower recent grey She says they have
been given 2 bases of maize flower but most
00:04:22
of the time says boards they sleep
without eating anything. Flood victims.
00:04:30
Says most of the assistance
they have received is
00:04:33
a from politicians running for
office in the upcoming May elections
00:04:38
a community turmoil was but
he says when they come with
00:04:42
a bag of maize they tell
us to eat together in
00:04:45
a group this is not practical says Wendy
because some of us have 4 children who are
00:04:52
others who for the children it is
assume not enough in a minute he has in
00:04:57
a mouse is the bank providing
cycle relief aid is still
00:05:01
a problem because of the damage
to roads and bridges the Torah is
00:05:06

Development Program she says Air Force
00:05:11

of the flood affected the people here
00:05:16
at the nations working in. Implementing
the plan and we are already
00:05:23
mobilized him from our central marriage and
Response Fund is based in New York upon
00:05:28
2000000. Dollars and acknowledging that
actually not enough but will continue with
00:05:34
the efforts to bring Nathanson side.
00:05:41
Swamping entire villages with heavy rains
that are flooded in parts of southern
00:05:45
allow we and the Zimbabwean president.
March decree had half of the country's
00:05:52
districts disaster areas. Seen
now for viewing use land in
00:05:59
Mozambique hundreds of thousands of people
have been forced out of their homes by
00:06:03
cycle only die reporter Mohammad
Yousuf is in bear and takes us to
00:06:07
a new shelter for many of the storm
victims. We are in one of the nearly
00:06:14
temporary bill shelters in the city of
para visitation is filled with women and
00:06:19
children we can see people registering to
receive salons distributed by the United
00:06:23
Nations Refugee Agency units here most of
these people come from and don't do and
00:06:29
boozy districts there are cities hosting
more than 150000 displaced people. With
00:06:35
such
00:06:36
a popular show with little food and clean
water medical emergencies of course found
00:06:40
150 cholera cases aid agencies say they're
doing their best to contain the busiest
00:06:46
and stop cholera. Sites only die hit
Mozambique in mid March the storm
00:06:53
and the flooding has claimed the
lives of more than 500 people.
00:07:00
According to the government officials more
than 1800000 people in the Muslim Bakery

00:07:15
Algeria has announced that
President abilities with
00:07:18
a flicker will resign before his mandate
expires on April 28th the statement said
00:07:24
the ailing leader would take steps to
ensure state institutions continue to
00:07:28
function during the transition period the
announcement yesterday was received with
00:07:34
some joy but there was a little
00:07:35
a little euphoria as protesters insisted
the whole rolling system must change under
00:07:41
the constitution if the president steps
down the speaker of the upper house of the
00:07:46
parliament serves as interim leader
for up to 90 days during which
00:07:51
a presidential election must be organized
the 82 year old daughter Flicka has been
00:07:56
in a wheelchair since suffering
00:07:58
a stroke in 2013 protests erupted
when he announced he would seek
00:08:03
a 5th term but he later
backed down Marina Ottaway
00:08:08
a Middle East fellow at the Woodward
Wilson Center spoke to v.o.a.
00:08:12
Senior analyst Mohamed el Sheikh now he
about the complicated political crisis in
00:08:17
Algeria following that announcement. Well
we don't know if it's really what the
00:08:23
feel come who issued the statement that
nobody knows his personal role in this but
00:08:28
it's quite clear that this is an attempt
by the regime to maintain control over the
00:08:33
transition they are trying to make
sure that the transition does not the
00:08:39
lead to the coming to power of people close
to the protestors or at least people
00:08:45
who are not part of the present regime so
I think from the point of view of those
00:08:51
life change the idea that the transition
has to take place for all the institutions
00:08:59
it's ominous because it means that the
regime is still determined not to allow any
00:09:03
change to take place the announcement was
00:09:06
a deceive the sons or however there was
little sign of euphoria of this that has
00:09:12
insisted that the whole ruling
system must change with such
00:09:17
a demand push the army to intervene and
that it be their Gyptian experience while
00:09:22
they fuse almost the possibility that the
problem with knowing what the military is
00:09:28
going to do no country is always very
difficult because the literary is never
00:09:33
transparent organization at the same
time the term solution takes place
00:09:40
within the all the institutions but it's
not going to be any transition at all
00:09:45
there is going to be a new figure that will
flicker but there is not a going to be
00:09:51
a new type of government
the model can work so it's
00:09:54
a very difficult the situation because
you've got the monastery pushed to her it
00:10:00
may lead to the intervention not broken
into the ring tone of the argument anyway
00:10:05
they don't push enough they'll find themselves
with the same regime I know mine are
00:10:12
good because whatever the Algerian
Constitution of the president has
00:10:16
a commission is than that of the
speaker of the upper house of. G.m.
00:10:20
Parliament would act as interim
leader for up to 90 days during which
00:10:26
a presidential election must be organized
What are the different scenarios that
00:10:30
could emerge in Algeria to me the
most optimistic scenario is one
00:10:37
that looks like the Tunisian
scenario where the formation of
00:10:43
a broad committee of thought to overthrow
the national convention of thought you
00:10:48
know which not only people close to the
government to but also be present at the
00:10:53
all other organization of the protesters
but that typically already organized
00:10:59
groups that have started participating
in the protest for example the judges
00:11:05
dissipated as judges the law you have
participated is below your sense on what that
00:11:11
the country needs is a very
broad national dialogue but not
00:11:16
a national dialogue the way the government
wants it which would be appearing
00:11:20
restrict the dialogue strictly to arming
the Constitution but the 2 national
00:11:25
dialogue that might hear it happen
if the demonstrations continue on
00:11:31
a massive scale it's an interesting issue
about how much your army would call it
00:11:37
that really clearly manifested the public
opinion that they wanted it brought to
00:11:42
pass there are
00:11:44
a lot of our normal me now you would take
it but are you saying no more 50 percent
00:11:49
chance of such both
00:11:50
a coalition perhaps less than the but I
think that there could be the best case
00:11:55
scenario for Algeria otherwise it's going
to be either a military takeover or
00:12:00
a return to the old regime with out
of the picture that was Mary Ottaway
00:12:05
a Middle East fellow at the Woodward
Wilson Center speaking with you
00:12:08
a senior analyst
00:12:10
a mom of directionality. 16 past the hour
00:12:17
you're listening to Africa newstand on The
Voice of America. Kenya. University is
00:12:22
making 4 years since an al Shabaab
00:12:25
a militant attack claimed $148.00 lived
most of them students while the Somali
00:12:30
terrorist group has carried out numerous
assaults since then it remains their
00:12:35
deadliest attack inside Kenya
border reports from Nairobi.
00:12:43
Retellings o.p.o. Is a cup and it will
be but in 2015 he was studying to be
00:12:47
a teacher at Gary's
00:12:49
a university when militants attacked or.
Second that he had what sounded like
00:12:56
gunshots and after some minutes the sound
of people screaming his 2 roommates ran
00:13:01
outside to see what was happening it
was the last appeal so that my life.
00:13:07
Outside this morning go to the would be
gotten from my own car by then I had to
00:13:13
hide behind. The back
of the not too distant.
00:13:22
But maybe I was like you are just
my god that's right getting.
00:13:29
Up there is Kid 148 people agree said
university almost all of them students the
00:13:36
university took 9 months to reopen but now
has 1500 students more than double the
00:13:41
number 2050 West chancellor. Say
they have hit for the tragedy we
00:13:48
have moved on because of resilience
because of our. Marketing strategist
00:13:56
and because of what we have done that has
brought us to this park. The university
00:14:03
we have put up with
00:14:05
a war and then we have also star village
police post which housed 30 officers
00:14:12
after security increased ascites of the
previous attacks he to soft target this one
00:14:17
generally 15 attack on
00:14:19
a robust 10 in office complex killed
21 people but Kenyan security forces
00:14:26
responded quickly in
00:14:27
a given credit for keeping the death
toll down compared to previous attacks
00:14:32
political analysts and lecture I get kind
invested in it will be some Kamau agreed
00:14:37
used to see the need to
response that also used to take
00:14:41
a bit long but I think if you remember
what happened recently with it even if we
00:14:47
lost lives I think the number of people
who were rescued and the way the whole
00:14:52
issue was under in terms of communication
in terms of the time of response I think
00:14:56
the security forces have learnt important
lessons despite security for survivors
00:15:01
like appeal the threat of us about attack
remains that reality for which Kenya must
00:15:06
always be prepared right number for v.o.a.
00:15:09
News. The 25th
00:15:16
anniversary of the Rwandan genocide approaches
on Sunday we are bringing us series
00:15:20
of deeply moving profiles of men women and
children who survived that terrible time
00:15:27
they are talking about the lives they lost
the lives they have found and their hope
00:15:31
for
00:15:32
a new and better Awana today in the
survivors series let's hear from you then
00:15:39
who was only 12 when he lost his mother
and 2 siblings in the genocide he and
00:15:44
others rescue kids were taken to
an affinity but he left and became
00:15:49
a street kid in Kigali for several
months until he was taken to another are
00:15:54
phonetic which helped him study to become
a pharmacist while he says he's happy as
00:16:00
a 37 year old husband and father of 2 he
says most people don't know he is furious
00:16:07
but heights it as best as he can.
00:16:14
I remember many things but one that I
cannot forget is the death of my 2 young
00:16:19
sisters I always think I'll see them again
some more I heard that they died but I
00:16:24
never saw their bodies people told me
they had been exempt from my saves but I
00:16:29
never saw them pass me all those thing
that when I wake up one morning I'll meet
00:16:33
them of all things that happened during the
genocide this is what remains Hence in
00:16:39
my heart. What I have done whatever the
00:16:45
reason this matter remains fresh in my
mind is that shortly before genocide broke
00:16:49
out my 7 year old and 3 and
00:16:52
a half years old sisters and I were together
Sunday I would visited some people in
00:16:57
a sudden home I saved my life and left and
all is think they may have continued to
00:17:03
leave even after I left them unfortunately
for libel sources confirmed they were
00:17:09
killed under their boat is why exempt from
Musgrave's so I always feel that there's
00:17:15
mission of failed to accomplish I was
their elder brother and I was supposed to
00:17:19
look after them even though I didn't have
the ability to save them my heart always
00:17:24
throws that guilt back to me.
Who were where did the hours 12
00:17:31
years when genocide ended and I had nobody
to rely on no one to take care of me and
00:17:37
I found myself inside of an age which was
located in for Mongo Mark commune life
00:17:43
was tough the. Spent only one week in the
orphanage then colleagues of my age and I
00:17:48
decided to go to Kigali I knew nobody
there I normally crack a joke and say I'm
00:17:55
a former street child in Kigali who now
owns his own house in the same Kigali. I
00:18:02
wondered into families but I ended up in
00:18:04
a religious orphanage that raised mantilla
finished my university studies. I own
00:18:10
a home and I'm
00:18:12
a father of 2 children. Were
What did our 1st of all
00:18:19
forgiveness relieves the one who forgives
than it does to the one forgiven I
00:18:24
accepted what happened to us that our
loved ones were killed by other people we
00:18:29
didn't know all the people we knew. Our
hearts are clean we forgive them even
00:18:34
though some of them didn't ask for forgiveness.
Others don't even acknowledge their
00:18:39
crimes we have them in out of Hava
hearts relieved and leave us more life.
00:18:49

00:27:29
mates own prepared head of Morris Kim She
says the No if thing or 2 about it more
00:27:34
as openings of my 2 main everyone is or
can't the players are fine and they're
00:27:40
looking forward to this game although
helpful is our win again though it won't be
00:27:46
an easy game since they have them
advantage but we're hopeful. Of
00:27:51
a play them in the. Run up and we defeated
them by Tool one and we hope it can be 3
00:27:58
time repeat itself. Even when
we're on our way in Ethiopia is
00:28:03
a bit sick of our stance for the Council
for instance at African Football
00:28:07
Association an association of the football
playing missions in East and Central
00:28:10
Africa Chris agreements have been
00:28:12
a distance of training this much in the
2nd ahead of tomorrow's game Straker put
00:28:18
police proficiency for because they
get in Kazakhstan and scored in
00:28:22
a 31 win I've been super intense personal
now in Champions League game in September
00:28:27
last year
00:28:28
a month all right because our history and
I'm one of my best idea mom went there
00:28:34
for my country I'm 100 percent right they
have us the best defender you then the
00:28:41
k.u.n.c.
00:28:41
Who plays for stimulus State College in
Florida and Straker Sunder and I went to me
00:28:46
who plays for socialist and Oklahoma State
at the present players that call to
00:28:50
Linda Hope to help the team get
00:28:52
a point away from home but she says she
would be cautious when playing against.
00:28:57
What I'm going to predict so it does
Biscoe defensive but if things change.
00:29:05
To a different things that amount of
focusing for the past and looking for want
00:29:11
a number of those named
to means. That this was
00:29:16
a grimace they took no good yes or to go
the 2 teams meet again on Saturday this
00:29:21
week and over. Against Africa so I didn't
come in the next room and when it's on
00:29:27
the side of sports I am what we me divison
I get into the compiler Uganda thinks
00:29:32
Magoon me I'm Sonny young and you're
listening to the sunny side of sports on the
00:29:38
Voice of America still with African football
the draw for the 29 team Africa Cup
00:29:45

12th near Cairo Egypt according to
00:29:51
a statement from the Confederation of African
Football caf the draw for the $24.00

00:30:07
looking forward to the draw is the stars
of Tanzania who qualified for the Nations
00:30:13
Cup for the 1st time in 39 years for
reaction Iron Mike and bone you reach the
00:30:20
technical director of the Tanzania
Football Federation and the ninja. Excited
00:30:27
for me and I know you suggest all
along that wasn't easy choice
00:30:34
and Stastny because on the streets.
Everyone else excited for us to.
00:30:42
Show that we were you know
because he was coming.
00:30:49
For 2 we knew that we could
be shot 6 times. A week so I
00:30:55
was out there shaking. Hands
and scouting everyway
00:31:02
on the street now people do
is he saw this he said it's
00:31:06
a good cook opportunity for real people
for all cities and there are so many big
00:31:11
move that have also want to try
to play in the Afghan climate
00:31:14
a 1000 yes kid of those big moves are likely
going to meet. You know you for what.
00:31:21
I know all the big. But did not you did say
that he's all we can manage him we can
00:31:26
manage him because we understand what it
takes for us to be there and we're just
00:31:31
going to get us out the door but I'm
sure we have a call. To the base from
00:31:37
a sugar down games that we're going
to. Have to go because we've got
00:31:43
a 5 Paul said Ok if you think I'm
probably I. Think we're not going to be
00:31:50
I'm going to be a very strong
advocate I always try to change
00:31:54
a lot. More so I think the same people
in our plan so be Ok i think i will
00:32:01
shock
00:32:01
a lot of people when they see the only place
because trust house. Is probably half
00:32:08
the time I mean we're trying to do it
because luckily it's finishing meet May
00:32:15
and also internationally trying to last
not only is finishing it may so I think
00:32:22
it's for us because maybe people rushing
stop look at this we need to inform mom
00:32:26
and see no we haven't made
00:32:28
a decision we're going to go back to planning
this time well he said that was. Just
00:32:33
as planning in preparing for us on think
you got up with us time to make That's.
00:32:39
The Technical Director of the Tanzania
Football Federation and he spoke with Mike
00:32:45
by telephone from Darst along Tanzania I'm
Sunny young and you're listening to the
00:32:51
sunny side of sports on the Voice
of America meanwhile Iron Mike and
00:32:58
Bono also had
00:32:59
a chance to chat with the could do 5 goon
the chairman of the Lagos State Chess
00:33:03
board Association to convolute told Iron
Mike the recent victory of 8 year old
00:33:10
Tenney to add a wound me in a New
York State Chess competition was
00:33:15
a proud moment for Nigeria. Has made.
00:33:22
All of those Bay Area problems made
every night I drown in. All this was
00:33:28
a very proud moment for all of us
and of course I think this is does
00:33:31
a big you know many moment of all
things to come do we have more of
00:33:34
a dual meet the Neal just champion in the
making in Lake Erie and I believe will
00:33:39
help out on the thousands of them you know
like you say there are just after grades
00:33:44
Ma where Nancy once we do that Will Ripley
was how can we come up to the middle
00:33:48
class and make you proud we found p.w.
00:33:50
See this young so far for taking the baton
by the Right now because without them we
00:33:57
would have gotten to this stage when
this started all 5 years ago we had its
00:34:01
schools involved votes today we have 22
schools and I cannot show you this time
00:34:06
next year would have at least Texas schools
involved our duty as small dozen of the
00:34:12
cost it is to create awareness all over
the state what the response was isn't
00:34:17
present when it was in the response by
schools the young want to give to go there
00:34:22
when it has been great so it has been very
good and I can tell you that I mean I'm
00:34:26
sure that in the next 6 months we would
have another town inflated sponsored by the
00:34:30
weather Chevron all about work trying to
make payroll I would get in there but
00:34:34
we're just not there yet but I can assure
you the game of chess the tomato football
00:34:39
and I do have
00:34:40
a positive thing for young ones you know
which helps at critical thinking in terms
00:34:43
of problem solving it does a lot
of things in schools the i.q.
00:34:47
Goes up
00:34:47
a notch. Because you're always thinking
whatever you're looking at your thinking
00:34:52
how can I do this we're going to do that
the chess training you have that is taking
00:34:55
over that's the can do fogl own chairman
of the Laos state just Board Association
00:35:01
and to come both spoke with Iron Mike in
Lagos Nigeria I'm Sonny young and you're
00:35:07
listening to the sunny side of
sports on the Voice of America.
00:35:32
Joining us once again on the show is
sports reporter. And also he's not
00:35:37
a sports host and free day Al sporty Greetings
Dan sporty greeting Sunny it's good
00:35:43
to see you here in person instead of on
the phone or in some far flung remote
00:35:47
location nice to have you in the studio
did we heard from gumi Davis Rocco
00:35:54
when Jen Kampala at the top of the show me
was reporting on this the limbic women's
00:36:00
soccer qualifying match between Uganda and
Ethiopia the Olympics right around the
00:36:06
corner in Tokyo next year and that reminds
me did you I just got back from Japan
00:36:13
talk a little bit about your trip
what did you do in Japan funny I had
00:36:16
a great experience in Japan
I got a chance to visit
00:36:20
a family friend who's staying there for
00:36:22
a few months so I was exposed to some of
the Japanese culture from an insider which
00:36:28
is quite a different experience
than you would get as
00:36:31
a tourist going around the country
so that was really exciting I spent
00:36:37
a number of days in Kyoto which is
this famous city in Japan for having
00:36:43
a lot of architectural sites that are
integral to the history of Japan
00:36:48
a lot of shrines and temples it's kind of
similar to what an American might think
00:36:55
of when they think of
Boston Massachusetts having
00:36:57
a lot of old buildings and old architecture.
Related to the foundation of the
00:37:02
country as we know it today versus
00:37:05
a city like Tokyo is the Commerce Center
I mean hundreds so I was able to be in
00:37:10
Tokyo as well and one of the things I
saw in Tokyo was the the blossoming new
00:37:16
Olympic stadium which is going to be
ready a few months from now almost
00:37:20
a year ahead of schedule
now you say you. New
00:37:23
a lympics stadium and yet there's some
renovation involved talk about the also the
00:37:28
site which is in the
downtown part of Tokyo
00:37:31
a beautiful park setting with trees and
00:37:35
a temple nearby and it's walking distance
from some of the major kind of Commerce
00:37:41
hotel shopping areas of Tokyo was the site
of the 1964 Summer Olympics the stadium
00:37:47
continued to be used for
00:37:49
a number of decades after that and was torn
down in 2015 when Tokyo was aware that
00:37:56
they were going to be hosting the
2020 Olympics and so now from scratch
00:37:59
a brand new stadium is being built and I
was able to walk around the stadium and
00:38:03
see how it looks I was also
sitting in the stands at
00:38:07
a swallow's professional baseball game in
March watching the game but also seeing
00:38:13
the stadium being built
in the background it was
00:38:16
a pretty cool experience did you get
00:38:18
a sense of how the Japanese are preparing
for the games did they seem well along in
00:38:24
their preparations Oh yeah absolutely I
mean I think one of the ideas for the
00:38:29
i.o.c. Offering the games to Tokyo
was that the city already has such
00:38:33
a great infrastructure they are used to
having tourists come to the city they have
00:38:39
a robust public transportation system the
city is pretty walkable the only coffee
00:38:45
out I would give anybody who is planning
to go to Tokyo is that Be aware walking on
00:38:50
the streets because there are
00:38:51
a lot of bicycles on the sidewalk so you
have to look for traffic and bicycle
00:38:57
traffic when you're walking around in Tokyo.
People are really excited about sports
00:39:02
there and one of the examples of how excited
and deep into sports culture people in
00:39:07
Japan are was that Ichiro Suzuki famous
baseball player announced his retirement
00:39:14
from professional baseball he started his
career in Japan moved on to the Seattle
00:39:18
Mariners in the 1st part of the to thousands
went on to have an incredible. Career
00:39:23
in Major League Baseball joined the Seattle
Mariners during this year during spring
00:39:27
training and kind of had
00:39:29
a couple of farewell games in the Tokyo
Dome in Japan and bade farewell to all his
00:39:35
fans on his home soil what was technically
game 2 of the major league baseball
00:39:41
season and the next morning that was all
anybody wanted to talk about you know
00:39:46
there was
00:39:46
a lots of international news politics news
in the United States and Europe and the
00:39:51
big story and all of the t.v.
00:39:52
Shows and all the newspapers
with each are retiring so it's
00:39:55
a very plugged in sports
culture there in Japan sun
00:39:59
a young and you're listening to the sunny
side of sports on the Voice of America
00:40:05
chatting with Dan free Del Dan just got
back from Japan which will host the 2020
00:40:11
Olympics and Dan I understand
you picked up some
00:40:14
a limp dick memorabilia so to speak well
you know there is there is not quite as
00:40:19
robust a souvenir situation
yet on the Olympics
00:40:24
a few little trinkets here and there but I
wanted to offer your sunny something to
00:40:27
keep you energized not that you have
any trouble being energized but it's
00:40:32
a package of the Aquarius sports drink
which I'm sure is similar to some of our
00:40:36
listeners it has a good
dose of vitamin c. And b.
00:40:40
Vitamins to keep you going just mix it
with water and you'll be all set for your
00:40:45
Devore Is this the summer I feel more
energetic just looking at the package to yes
00:40:51
I will try this I guess it's as you said
before the show it's a kin to gator
00:40:56
a that kind of
00:40:57
a sports drink Alectryon vitamins hydration
keeps you going and the and the hot
00:41:02
weather so save it maybe
for July. Well wait
00:41:07
a few months well then you mentioned chiro
the Japanese baseball star and the start
00:41:13
of the major league baseball season here
in Washington big game later Tuesday night
00:41:20
featuring basically. He was once the
cornerstone of the Washington Nationals
00:41:26
franchise Bryce Harper
but he's returning in
00:41:29
a different uniform talk about
just down the street from v.o.a.
00:41:33
As Studios I'll be there working at the
game tonight Bryce Harper assigned
00:41:38
a big contract in the off season with the
Philadelphia Phillies whose home field is
00:41:43
just over 100 miles north
of Washington d.c.
00:41:46
He is making
00:41:47
a return to Washington to face his old
teammates including fire balling right
00:41:52
handed pitcher Max Scherzer in the
game tonight so he's actually off to
00:41:56
a good start. Managed to sweep the Atlanta
Braves over the weekend in their opening
00:42:02
series Bryce Harper had
00:42:03
a $465.00 foot home run during one of the
games. And it will be interesting to see
00:42:08
what kind of reaction he gets from the
local fans I think there will hear
00:42:12
a few boos from the crowd when Bryce steps
up to the plate on Monday night tonight
00:42:18
Tuesday night Bryce Harper briefly was the
highest paid player not just had major
00:42:24
league baseball but in American sports and
then he was surpassed by Mike Trout of
00:42:31
the Los Angeles Angels What was your
reaction Dan to Trouts big contract Well
00:42:36
there's no doubt that Mike Trout is the
best player in baseball he's been at for 7
00:42:40
years or so he's not the most talked about
player because 1st of all he plays for
00:42:44
the kind of the 2nd popular team in Los
Angeles and in the Anaheim Angels angles of
00:42:51
Anaheim and hasn't been in the playoffs
very often in his career he's made amazing
00:42:56
catches he hits home runs
he steals bases he's really
00:42:59
a great all around player and he's actually
up there in his 1st 7 years of his
00:43:05
career with all of the greatest players
in baseball history as far as the stats
00:43:09
that he's put on the field so sounds like
he deserves it and he didn't in great
00:43:12
shape he hasn't had many injuries I'm sure
he'll play well into his thirty's I'm
00:43:18
Sunny young and you're listening to the
sunny side of sports on the void. Of
00:43:22
America chatting with sports reporter
Dan free Del Dan I know were only
00:43:28
a few games into the new Major League
Baseball season what have been maybe some of
00:43:33
the highlights and surprises for you so for
well you know for example we were just
00:43:37
talking about the Seattle Mariners playing
00:43:39
a couple of games early in the year in Tokyo
and then coming back finishing spring
00:43:44
training and playing
again here in the u.s.
00:43:47
They actually have the most wins
in baseball because they played
00:43:50
a few extra games they actually played
7 games there $6.00 and $1.00. If our
00:43:55
listeners remember last year was kind of
an epic World Series between the Boston
00:43:59
Red Sox and the Los Angeles Dodgers the Red
Sox capped off an amazing season where
00:44:05
they had the motions in baseball and kind
of flew through the playoffs feeding some
00:44:09
good teams in the playoffs winning up winning
the World Series the Red Sox are kind
00:44:14
of struggling they're there they're one and
4 they're in last place in the American
00:44:20
League East they've had some pitching
problems giving up 6789 runs
00:44:24
a game while on the other hand the Dodgers
are in 1st place in the nationally west
00:44:29
and on opening day I believe they set
retired Major League record with the most
00:44:35
home runs on opening day in the history
of baseball and they actually have 2
00:44:39
players so far have combined for 7 home
runs in the 1st 5 games of the season so
00:44:45
the Dodgers look like they're in
good shape even though they by
00:44:48
a long long season last year losing to the
Red Sox in the World Series and Dan I
00:44:52
understand you want to
give a shout out for
00:44:54
a Milwaukee Brewer Christian yellow
was the National League m.v.p.
00:44:59
He was you know an outstanding young player
with the Miami Marlins and was traded
00:45:03
to the Brewers 2 seasons ago
he was the national m.v.p.
00:45:07
Last year helped the Brewers get back
on top if you remember there was
00:45:12
a lot of up and down in the last week of
the season in the nationally Central where
00:45:19
the Chicago Cubs and the brewers were all
and the Cardinals were. Trying to figure
00:45:23
out who was going to make the
playoffs they had to be an extra game
00:45:27
a game $163.00 in the season the
Brewers want up in the National League
00:45:31
Championship Series losing
to the Dodgers is off to
00:45:34
a great start again to make
it seem as if his m.v.p.
00:45:38
Season last year was not
an aberration there is
00:45:41
a major league baseball team based in
Minneapolis Minnesota the Minnesota Twins but
00:45:46
coming up this weekend Dan maybe the best
day of college basketball all year the
00:45:53
final 4 will be played in Minneapolis
Minnesota quick look at the matchups in the
00:45:59
u.s.
00:46:00
Men's college basketball championship
tournament top seeded Virginia will play Auburn
00:46:06
and that will be followed by
00:46:08
a game between Michigan State and Texas
Tech your thoughts on the final 4 dan Well
00:46:13
you know the interesting thing about the
University of Virginia not too far away
00:46:17
here from Washington d.c.
00:46:19
Is one of the best teams in college
basketball the last few years that coach is
00:46:25
Tony Bennett not to be confused with the
well known crooner Tony Bennett. One of
00:46:31
the best teams in the last few years but
really haven't fulfilled some of their
00:46:35
potential losing to Syracuse
00:46:37
a couple of years ago and stunningly
losing to University of Maryland Baltimore
00:46:43
County a tiny tiny school just
north of here in Washington d.c.
00:46:47
In the 1st round of the into double
00:46:49
a tournament last year shocking
everyone who do you v.a.
00:46:53
To make it deep into the tournament so
finally they're paying off on their
00:46:56
potential and so I think
you mentioned there isn't
00:47:00
a player of African descent who made
00:47:01
a big play keeping Uva season alive in
their game last week and indeed let's give
00:47:07
a shout out a Sunnyside a sports
shout out for guineas my d.d.
00:47:12
a Key day for the Cavaliers of Virginia
talk about the play he made Dan Yeah he was
00:47:16
able to keep play alive and then wind
up making the game tying show. In
00:47:23
relation to send the game into overtime
against Purdue that Uva that University of
00:47:28
Virginia wound up winning in the extra
period but without him making that rebound
00:47:35
and making the game tying shot we're talking
about to do in the final for one team
00:47:39
that did not make the final 4 perennial
favorites Duke University the blue devils
00:47:45
of Duke led by Hall of Fame coach Mike
Schiff chef ski. They didn't quite make it
00:47:51
they lost in overtime dn But let's give
another shout out for Zion Williamson
00:47:56
pretty much the consensus collegiate player
of the year your thoughts on Zion is
00:48:01
high in Williamson really athletic strong
large player almost probably the same
00:48:05
size as Le Bron James Young Player leading
the Duke team actually people are
00:48:11
expecting 4 players from this Duke
team along with Williamson r.j.
00:48:15
Barrett cam redish Trey Jones to
be 1st round picks in the n.b.a.
00:48:19
Draft later this year probably the best
players this year in college basketball but
00:48:26
not the best team interesting so it's not
always talent that wins these games no
00:48:32
doubt about it I mean you
have Michigan State Tom Izzo
00:48:35
a coach that's been in the game for 25 years
I won one championship Michigan State
00:48:41
was being routed on by Magic Johnson the
famous Michigan State grad who really put
00:48:46
college basketball on the map back and I
believe 180 in the final game with Larry
00:48:50
Bird and they're going up against Texas
Tech so you know 4 teams that are from that
00:48:57
are big schools who have plenty of money
but actually 4 schools that don't have
00:49:01
a ton of history in the finals except
for Michigan State So if Tom Izzo and
00:49:07
Michigan State can get past Texas Tech I
think everybody's going to be predicting
00:49:11
Michigan State wins
00:49:12
a championship this year and then you know
I love nicknames sports nicknames on the
00:49:16
sunny side of sports so let's give shout
outs for all final 4 teams the Cavaliers
00:49:21
of Virginia the. Tigers of Auburn the
Spartans of Michigan State and the Red
00:49:27
Raiders of Texas Tech I think Texas
Tech in Auburn 1st time in the Final 4
00:49:32
absolutely Auburn 01 for football and Charles
Barkley Charles Barkley great player
00:49:37
at all hurting but really no one for football
will be interesting to see if Barkley
00:49:43
has something to say if Auburn makes it
into the final game Thanks Dan sports

00:07:15
Algeria has announced that
President abilities with
00:07:18
a flicker will resign before his mandate
expires on April 28th the statement said
00:07:24
the ailing leader would take steps to
ensure state institutions continue to
00:07:28
function during the transition period the
announcement yesterday was received with
00:07:34
some joy but there was a little
00:07:35
a little euphoria as protesters insisted
the whole rolling system must change under
00:07:41
the constitution if the president steps
down the speaker of the upper house of the
00:07:46
parliament serves as interim leader
for up to 90 days during which
00:07:51
a presidential election must be organized
the 82 year old daughter Flicka has been
00:07:56
in a wheelchair since suffering
00:07:58
a stroke in 2013 protests erupted
when he announced he would seek
00:08:03
a 5th term but he later
backed down Marina Ottaway
00:08:08
a Middle East fellow at the Woodward
Wilson Center spoke to v.o.a.
00:08:12
Senior analyst Mohamed el Sheikh now he
about the complicated political crisis in
00:08:17
Algeria following that announcement. Well
we don't know if it's really what the
00:08:23
feel come who issued the statement that
nobody knows his personal role in this but
00:08:28
it's quite clear that this is an attempt
by the regime to maintain control over the
00:08:33
transition they are trying to make
sure that the transition does not the
00:08:39
lead to the coming to power of people close
to the protestors or at least people
00:08:45
who are not part of the present regime so
I think from the point of view of those
00:08:51
life change the idea that the transition
has to take place for all the institutions
00:08:59
it's ominous because it means that the
regime is still determined not to allow any
00:09:03
change to take place the announcement was
00:09:06
a deceive the sons or however there was
little sign of euphoria of this that has
00:09:12
insisted that the whole ruling
system must change with such
00:09:17
a demand push the army to intervene and
that it be their Gyptian experience while
00:09:22
they fuse almost the possibility that the
problem with knowing what the military is
00:09:28
going to do no country is always very
difficult because the literary is never
00:09:33
transparent organization at the same
time the term solution takes place
00:09:40
within the all the institutions but it's
not going to be any transition at all
00:09:45
there is going to be a new figure that will
flicker but there is not a going to be
00:09:51
a new type of government
the model can work so it's
00:09:54
a very difficult the situation because
you've got the monastery pushed to her it
00:10:00
may lead to the intervention not broken
into the ring tone of the argument anyway
00:10:05
they don't push enough they'll find themselves
with the same regime I know mine are
00:10:12
good because whatever the Algerian
Constitution of the president has
00:10:16
a commission is than that of the
speaker of the upper house of. G.m.
00:10:20
Parliament would act as interim
leader for up to 90 days during which
00:10:26
a presidential election must be organized
What are the different scenarios that
00:10:30
could emerge in Algeria to me the
most optimistic scenario is one
00:10:37
that looks like the Tunisian
scenario where the formation of
00:10:43
a broad committee of thought to overthrow
the national convention of thought you
00:10:48
know which not only people close to the
government to but also be present at the
00:10:53
all other organization of the protesters
but that typically already organized
00:10:59
groups that have started participating
in the protest for example the judges
00:11:05
dissipated as judges the law you have
participated is below your sense on what that
00:11:11
the country needs is a very
broad national dialogue but not
00:11:16
a national dialogue the way the government
wants it which would be appearing
00:11:20
restrict the dialogue strictly to arming
the Constitution but the 2 national
00:11:25
dialogue that might hear it happen
if the demonstrations continue on
00:11:31
a massive scale it's an interesting issue
about how much your army would call it
00:11:37
that really clearly manifested the public
opinion that they wanted it brought to
00:11:42
pass there are
00:11:44
a lot of our normal me now you would take
it but are you saying no more 50 percent
00:11:49
chance of such both
00:11:50
a coalition perhaps less than the but I
think that there could be the best case
00:11:55
scenario for Algeria otherwise it's going
to be either a military takeover or
00:12:00
a return to the old regime with out
of the picture that was Mary Ottaway
00:12:05
a Middle East fellow at the Woodward
Wilson Center speaking with you
00:12:08

00:12:10

previous attacks he to soft target this one
00:14:17
generally 15 attack on
00:14:19
a robust 10 in office complex killed
21 people but Kenyan security forces
00:14:26
responded quickly in
00:14:27
a given credit for keeping the death
toll down compared to previous attacks
00:14:32
political analysts and lecture I get kind
invested in it will be some Kamau agreed
00:14:37
used to see the need to
response that also used to take
00:14:41
a bit long but I think if you remember
what happened recently with it even if we
00:14:47
lost lives I think the number of people
who were rescued and the way the whole
00:14:52
issue was under in terms of communication
in terms of the time of response I think
00:14:56
the security forces have learnt important
lessons despite security for survivors
00:15:01
like appeal the threat of us about attack
remains that reality for which Kenya must
00:15:06
always be prepared right number for v.o.a.
00:15:09
News. The 25th
00:15:16
anniversary of the Rwandan genocide approaches
on Sunday we are bringing us series
00:15:20
of deeply moving profiles of men women and
children who survived that terrible time
00:15:27
they are talking about the lives they lost
the lives they have found and their hope
00:15:31
for
00:15:32
a new and better Awana today in the
survivors series let's hear from you then
00:15:39
who was only 12 when he lost his mother
and 2 siblings in the genocide he and
00:15:44
others rescue kids were taken to
an affinity but he left and became
00:15:49
a street kid in Kigali for several
months until he was taken to another are
00:15:54
phonetic which helped him study to become
a pharmacist while he says he's happy as
00:16:00
a 37 year old husband and father of 2 he
says most people don't know he is furious
00:16:07
but heights it as best as he can.
00:16:14
I remember many things but one that I
cannot forget is the death of my 2 young
00:16:19
sisters I always think I'll see them again
some more I heard that they died but I
00:16:24
never saw their bodies people told me
they had been exempt from my saves but I
00:16:29
never saw them pass me all those thing
that when I wake up one morning I'll meet
00:16:33
them of all things that happened during the
genocide this is what remains Hence in
00:16:39
my heart. What I have done whatever the
00:16:45
reason this matter remains fresh in my
mind is that shortly before genocide broke
00:16:49
out my 7 year old and 3 and
00:16:52
a half years old sisters and I were together
Sunday I would visited some people in
00:16:57
a sudden home I saved my life and left and
all is think they may have continued to
00:17:03
leave even after I left them unfortunately
for libel sources confirmed they were
00:17:09
killed under their boat is why exempt from
Musgrave's so I always feel that there's
00:17:15
mission of failed to accomplish I was
their elder brother and I was supposed to
00:17:19
look after them even though I didn't have
the ability to save them my heart always
00:17:24
throws that guilt back to me.
Who were where did the hours 12
00:17:31
years when genocide ended and I had nobody
to rely on no one to take care of me and
00:17:37
I found myself inside of an age which was
located in for Mongo Mark commune life
00:17:43
was tough the. Spent only one week in the
orphanage then colleagues of my age and I
00:17:48
decided to go to Kigali I knew nobody
there I normally crack a joke and say I'm
00:17:55
a former street child in Kigali who now
owns his own house in the same Kigali. I
00:18:02
wondered into families but I ended up in
00:18:04
a religious orphanage that raised mantilla
finished my university studies. I own
00:18:10
a home and I'm
00:18:12
a father of 2 children. Were
What did our 1st of all
00:18:19
forgiveness relieves the one who forgives
than it does to the one forgiven I
00:18:24
accepted what happened to us that our
loved ones were killed by other people we
00:18:29
didn't know all the people we knew. Our
hearts are clean we forgive them even
00:18:34
though some of them didn't ask for forgiveness.
Others don't even acknowledge their
00:18:39
crimes we have them in out of Hava
hearts relieved and leave us more life.

reaction Iron Mike and bone you reach the
00:30:20
technical director of the Tanzania
Football Federation and the ninja. Excited
00:30:27
for me and I know you suggest all
along that wasn't easy choice
00:30:34
and Stastny because on the streets.
Everyone else excited for us to.
00:30:42
Show that we were you know
because he was coming.
00:30:49
For 2 we knew that we could
be shot 6 times. A week so I
00:30:55
was out there shaking. Hands
and scouting everyway
00:31:02
on the street now people do
is he saw this he said it's
00:31:06
a good cook opportunity for real people
for all cities and there are so many big
00:31:11
move that have also want to try
to play in the Afghan climate
00:31:14
a 1000 yes kid of those big moves are likely
going to meet. You know you for what.
00:31:21
I know all the big. But did not you did say
that he's all we can manage him we can
00:31:26
manage him because we understand what it
takes for us to be there and we're just
00:31:31
going to get us out the door but I'm
sure we have a call. To the base from
00:31:37
a sugar down games that we're going
to. Have to go because we've got
00:31:43
a 5 Paul said Ok if you think I'm
probably I. Think we're not going to be
00:31:50
I'm going to be a very strong
advocate I always try to change
00:31:54
a lot. More so I think the same people
in our plan so be Ok i think i will
00:32:01
shock
00:32:01
a lot of people when they see the only place
because trust house. Is probably half
00:32:08
the time I mean we're trying to do it
because luckily it's finishing meet May
00:32:15
and also internationally trying to last
not only is finishing it may so I think
00:32:22
it's for us because maybe people rushing
stop look at this we need to inform mom
00:32:26
and see no we haven't made
00:32:28
a decision we're going to go back to planning
this time well he said that was. Just
00:32:33
as planning in preparing for us on think
you got up with us time to make That's.
00:32:39
The Technical Director of the Tanzania
Football Federation and he spoke with Mike
00:32:45
by telephone from Darst along Tanzania I'm
Sunny young and you're listening to the
00:32:51
sunny side of sports on the Voice
of America meanwhile Iron Mike and
00:32:58
Bono also had
00:32:59
a chance to chat with the could do 5 goon
the chairman of the Lagos State Chess
00:33:03
board Association to convolute told Iron
Mike the recent victory of 8 year old
00:33:10
Tenney to add a wound me in a New
York State Chess competition was
00:33:15
a proud moment for Nigeria. Has made.
00:33:22
All of those Bay Area problems made
every night I drown in. All this was
00:33:28
a very proud moment for all of us
and of course I think this is does
00:33:31
a big you know many moment of all
things to come do we have more of
00:33:34
a dual meet the Neal just champion in the
making in Lake Erie and I believe will
00:33:39
help out on the thousands of them you know
like you say there are just after grades
00:33:44
Ma where Nancy once we do that Will Ripley
was how can we come up to the middle
00:33:48
class and make you proud we found p.w.
00:33:50
See this young so far for taking the baton
by the Right now because without them we
00:33:57
would have gotten to this stage when
this started all 5 years ago we had its
00:34:01
schools involved votes today we have 22
schools and I cannot show you this time
00:34:06
next year would have at least Texas schools
involved our duty as small dozen of the
00:34:12
cost it is to create awareness all over
the state what the response was isn't
00:34:17
present when it was in the response by
schools the young want to give to go there
00:34:22
when it has been great so it has been very
good and I can tell you that I mean I'm
00:34:26
sure that in the next 6 months we would
have another town inflated sponsored by the
00:34:30
weather Chevron all about work trying to
make payroll I would get in there but
00:34:34
we're just not there yet but I can assure
you the game of chess the tomato football
00:34:39
and I do have
00:34:40
a positive thing for young ones you know
which helps at critical thinking in terms
00:34:43
of problem solving it does a lot
of things in schools the i.q.
00:34:47
Goes up
00:34:47
a notch. Because you're always thinking
whatever you're looking at your thinking
00:34:52
how can I do this we're going to do that
the chess training you have that is taking
00:34:55
over that's the can do fogl own chairman
of the Laos state just Board Association
00:35:01
and to come both spoke with Iron Mike in
Lagos Nigeria I'm Sonny young and you're
00:35:07
listening to the sunny side of
sports on the Voice of America.
00:35:32
Joining us once again on the show is
sports reporter. And also he's not
00:35:37
a sports host and free day Al sporty Greetings
Dan sporty greeting Sunny it's good
00:35:43
to see you here in person instead of on
the phone or in some far flung remote
00:35:47
location nice to have you in the studio
did we heard from gumi Davis Rocco
00:35:54
when Jen Kampala at the top of the show me
was reporting on this the limbic women's
00:36:00
soccer qualifying match between Uganda and
Ethiopia the Olympics right around the
00:36:06
corner in Tokyo next year and that reminds
me did you I just got back from Japan
00:36:13
talk a little bit about your trip
what did you do in Japan funny I had
00:36:16
a great experience in Japan
I got a chance to visit
00:36:20
a family friend who's staying there for
00:36:22
a few months so I was exposed to some of
the Japanese culture from an insider which
00:36:28
is quite a different experience
than you would get as
00:36:31
a tourist going around the country
so that was really exciting I spent
00:36:37
a number of days in Kyoto which is
this famous city in Japan for having
00:36:43
a lot of architectural sites that are
integral to the history of Japan
00:36:48
a lot of shrines and temples it's kind of
similar to what an American might think
00:36:55
of when they think of
Boston Massachusetts having
00:36:57
a lot of old buildings and old architecture.
Related to the foundation of the
00:37:02
country as we know it today versus
00:37:05
a city like Tokyo is the Commerce Center
I mean hundreds so I was able to be in
00:37:10
Tokyo as well and one of the things I
saw in Tokyo was the the blossoming new
00:37:16
Olympic stadium which is going to be
ready a few months from now almost
00:37:20
a year ahead of schedule
now you say you. New
00:37:23
a lympics stadium and yet there's some
renovation involved talk about the also the
00:37:28
site which is in the
downtown part of Tokyo
00:37:31
a beautiful park setting with trees and
00:37:35
a temple nearby and it's walking distance
from some of the major kind of Commerce
00:37:41
hotel shopping areas of Tokyo was the site
of the 1964 Summer Olympics the stadium
00:37:47
continued to be used for
00:37:49
a number of decades after that and was torn
down in 2015 when Tokyo was aware that
00:37:56
they were going to be hosting the
2020 Olympics and so now from scratch
00:37:59
a brand new stadium is being built and I
was able to walk around the stadium and
00:38:03
see how it looks I was also
sitting in the stands at
00:38:07
a swallow's professional baseball game in
March watching the game but also seeing
00:38:13
the stadium being built
in the background it was
00:38:16
a pretty cool experience did you get
00:38:18
a sense of how the Japanese are preparing
for the games did they seem well along in
00:38:24
their preparations Oh yeah absolutely I
mean I think one of the ideas for the
00:38:29
i.o.c. Offering the games to Tokyo
was that the city already has such
00:38:33
a great infrastructure they are used to
having tourists come to the city they have
00:38:39
a robust public transportation system the
city is pretty walkable the only coffee
00:38:45
out I would give anybody who is planning
to go to Tokyo is that Be aware walking on
00:38:50
the streets because there are
00:38:51
a lot of bicycles on the sidewalk so you
have to look for traffic and bicycle
00:38:57
traffic when you're walking around in Tokyo.
People are really excited about sports
00:39:02
there and one of the examples of how excited
and deep into sports culture people in
00:39:07
Japan are was that Ichiro Suzuki famous
baseball player announced his retirement
00:39:14
from professional baseball he started his
career in Japan moved on to the Seattle
00:39:18
Mariners in the 1st part of the to thousands
went on to have an incredible. Career
00:39:23
in Major League Baseball joined the Seattle
Mariners during this year during spring
00:39:27
training and kind of had
00:39:29
a couple of farewell games in the Tokyo
Dome in Japan and bade farewell to all his
00:39:35
fans on his home soil what was technically
game 2 of the major league baseball
00:39:41
season and the next morning that was all
anybody wanted to talk about you know
00:39:46
there was
00:39:46
a lots of international news politics news
in the United States and Europe and the
00:39:51
big story and all of the t.v.
00:39:52
Shows and all the newspapers
with each are retiring so it's
00:39:55
a very plugged in sports
culture there in Japan sun
00:39:59
a young and you're listening to the sunny
side of sports on the Voice of America
00:40:05
chatting with Dan free Del Dan just got
back from Japan which will host the 2020
00:40:11
Olympics and Dan I understand
you picked up some
00:40:14
a limp dick memorabilia so to speak well
you know there is there is not quite as
00:40:19
robust a souvenir situation
yet on the Olympics
00:40:24
a few little trinkets here and there but I
wanted to offer your sunny something to
00:40:27
keep you energized not that you have
any trouble being energized but it's
00:40:32
a package of the Aquarius sports drink
which I'm sure is similar to some of our
00:40:36
listeners it has a good
dose of vitamin c. And b.
00:40:40
Vitamins to keep you going just mix it
with water and you'll be all set for your
00:40:45
Devore Is this the summer I feel more
energetic just looking at the package to yes
00:40:51
I will try this I guess it's as you said
before the show it's a kin to gator
00:40:56
a that kind of
00:40:57
a sports drink Alectryon vitamins hydration
keeps you going and the and the hot
00:41:02
weather so save it maybe
for July. Well wait
00:41:07
a few months well then you mentioned chiro
the Japanese baseball star and the start
00:41:13
of the major league baseball season here
in Washington big game later Tuesday night
00:41:20
featuring basically. He was once the
cornerstone of the Washington Nationals
00:41:26
franchise Bryce Harper
but he's returning in
00:41:29
a different uniform talk about
just down the street from v.o.a.
00:41:33
As Studios I'll be there working at the
game tonight Bryce Harper assigned
00:41:38
a big contract in the off season with the
Philadelphia Phillies whose home field is
00:41:43
just over 100 miles north
of Washington d.c.
00:41:46
He is making
00:41:47
a return to Washington to face his old
teammates including fire balling right
00:41:52
handed pitcher Max Scherzer in the
game tonight so he's actually off to
00:41:56
a good start. Managed to sweep the Atlanta
Braves over the weekend in their opening
00:42:02
series Bryce Harper had
00:42:03
a $465.00 foot home run during one of the
games. And it will be interesting to see
00:42:08
what kind of reaction he gets from the
local fans I think there will hear
00:42:12
a few boos from the crowd when Bryce steps
up to the plate on Monday night tonight
00:42:18
Tuesday night Bryce Harper briefly was the
highest paid player not just had major
00:42:24
league baseball but in American sports and
then he was surpassed by Mike Trout of
00:42:31
the Los Angeles Angels What was your
reaction Dan to Trouts big contract Well
00:42:36
there's no doubt that Mike Trout is the
best player in baseball he's been at for 7
00:42:40
years or so he's not the most talked about
player because 1st of all he plays for
00:42:44
the kind of the 2nd popular team in Los
Angeles and in the Anaheim Angels angles of
00:42:51
Anaheim and hasn't been in the playoffs
very often in his career he's made amazing
00:42:56
catches he hits home runs
he steals bases he's really
00:42:59
a great all around player and he's actually
up there in his 1st 7 years of his
00:43:05
career with all of the greatest players
in baseball history as far as the stats
00:43:09
that he's put on the field so sounds like
he deserves it and he didn't in great
00:43:12
shape he hasn't had many injuries I'm sure
he'll play well into his thirty's I'm
00:43:18
Sunny young and you're listening to the
sunny side of sports on the void. Of
00:43:22
America chatting with sports reporter
Dan free Del Dan I know were only
00:43:28
a few games into the new Major League
Baseball season what have been maybe some of
00:43:33
the highlights and surprises for you so for
well you know for example we were just
00:43:37
talking about the Seattle Mariners playing
00:43:39
a couple of games early in the year in Tokyo
and then coming back finishing spring
00:43:44
training and playing
again here in the u.s.
00:43:47
They actually have the most wins
in baseball because they played
00:43:50
a few extra games they actually played
7 games there $6.00 and $1.00. If our
00:43:55
listeners remember last year was kind of
an epic World Series between the Boston
00:43:59
Red Sox and the Los Angeles Dodgers the Red
Sox capped off an amazing season where
00:44:05
they had the motions in baseball and kind
of flew through the playoffs feeding some
00:44:09
good teams in the playoffs winning up winning
the World Series the Red Sox are kind
00:44:14
of struggling they're there they're one and
4 they're in last place in the American
00:44:20
League East they've had some pitching
problems giving up 6789 runs
00:44:24
a game while on the other hand the Dodgers
are in 1st place in the nationally west
00:44:29
and on opening day I believe they set
retired Major League record with the most
00:44:35
home runs on opening day in the history
of baseball and they actually have 2
00:44:39
players so far have combined for 7 home
runs in the 1st 5 games of the season so
00:44:45
the Dodgers look like they're in
good shape even though they by
00:44:48
a long long season last year losing to the
Red Sox in the World Series and Dan I
00:44:52
understand you want to
give a shout out for
00:44:54
a Milwaukee Brewer Christian yellow
was the National League m.v.p.
00:44:59
He was you know an outstanding young player
with the Miami Marlins and was traded
00:45:03
to the Brewers 2 seasons ago
he was the national m.v.p.
00:45:07
Last year helped the Brewers get back
on top if you remember there was
00:45:12
a lot of up and down in the last week of
the season in the nationally Central where
00:45:19
the Chicago Cubs and the brewers were all
and the Cardinals were. Trying to figure
00:45:23
out who was going to make the
playoffs they had to be an extra game
00:45:27
a game $163.00 in the season the
Brewers want up in the National League
00:45:31
Championship Series losing
to the Dodgers is off to
00:45:34
a great start again to make
it seem as if his m.v.p.
00:45:38
Season last year was not
an aberration there is
00:45:41
a major league baseball team based in
Minneapolis Minnesota the Minnesota Twins but
00:45:46
coming up this weekend Dan maybe the best
day of college basketball all year the
00:45:53
final 4 will be played in Minneapolis
Minnesota quick look at the matchups in the
00:45:59
u.s.
00:46:00
Men's college basketball championship
tournament top seeded Virginia will play Auburn
00:46:06
and that will be followed by
00:46:08
a game between Michigan State and Texas
Tech your thoughts on the final 4 dan Well
00:46:13
you know the interesting thing about the
University of Virginia not too far away
00:46:17
here from Washington d.c.
00:46:19
Is one of the best teams in college
basketball the last few years that coach is
00:46:25
Tony Bennett not to be confused with the
well known crooner Tony Bennett. One of
00:46:31
the best teams in the last few years but
really haven't fulfilled some of their
00:46:35
potential losing to Syracuse
00:46:37
a couple of years ago and stunningly
losing to University of Maryland Baltimore
00:46:43
County a tiny tiny school just
north of here in Washington d.c.
00:46:47
In the 1st round of the into double
00:46:49
a tournament last year shocking
everyone who do you v.a.
00:46:53
To make it deep into the tournament so
finally they're paying off on their
00:46:56
potential and so I think
you mentioned there isn't
00:47:00
a player of African descent who made
00:47:01
a big play keeping Uva season alive in
their game last week and indeed let's give
00:47:07
a shout out a Sunnyside a sports
shout out for guineas my d.d.
00:47:12
a Key day for the Cavaliers of Virginia
talk about the play he made Dan Yeah he was
00:47:16
able to keep play alive and then wind
up making the game tying show. In
00:47:23
relation to send the game into overtime
against Purdue that Uva that University of
00:47:28
Virginia wound up winning in the extra
period but without him making that rebound
00:47:35
and making the game tying shot we're talking
about to do in the final for one team
00:47:39
that did not make the final 4 perennial
favorites Duke University the blue devils
00:47:45
of Duke led by Hall of Fame coach Mike
Schiff chef ski. They didn't quite make it
00:47:51
they lost in overtime dn But let's give
another shout out for Zion Williamson
00:47:56
pretty much the consensus collegiate player
of the year your thoughts on Zion is
00:48:01
high in Williamson really athletic strong
large player almost probably the same
00:48:05
size as Le Bron James Young Player leading
the Duke team actually people are
00:48:11
expecting 4 players from this Duke
team along with Williamson r.j.
00:48:15
Barrett cam redish Trey Jones to
be 1st round picks in the n.b.a.
00:48:19
Draft later this year probably the best
players this year in college basketball but
00:48:26
not the best team interesting so it's not
always talent that wins these games no
00:48:32
doubt about it I mean you
have Michigan State Tom Izzo
00:48:35
a coach that's been in the game for 25 years
I won one championship Michigan State
00:48:41
was being routed on by Magic Johnson the
famous Michigan State grad who really put
00:48:46
college basketball on the map back and I
believe 180 in the final game with Larry
00:48:50
Bird and they're going up against Texas
Tech so you know 4 teams that are from that
00:48:57
are big schools who have plenty of money
but actually 4 schools that don't have
00:49:01
a ton of history in the finals except
for Michigan State So if Tom Izzo and
00:49:07
Michigan State can get past Texas Tech I
think everybody's going to be predicting
00:49:11
Michigan State wins
00:49:12
a championship this year and then you know
I love nicknames sports nicknames on the
00:49:16
sunny side of sports so let's give shout
outs for all final 4 teams the Cavaliers
00:49:21
of Virginia the. Tigers of Auburn the
Spartans of Michigan State and the Red
00:49:27
Raiders of Texas Tech I think Texas
Tech in Auburn 1st time in the Final 4
00:49:32
absolutely Auburn 01 for football and Charles
Barkley Charles Barkley great player
00:49:37
at all hurting but really no one for football
will be interesting to see if Barkley
00:49:43
has something to say if Auburn makes it
into the final game Thanks Dan sports
00:49:47
reporter Dan Di Della will have you back
Dan And that wraps up the April 2nd
